Have you been thinking about getting involved in the community? Do you have a desire to give back? Do you enjoy working with young people and want to make a positive difference? STARS – “Speakers, Tutors, Achievement, Retention, Success” could be what you’re looking for. STARS is an organized mentoring and tutoring program serving Job Corps students, located on Rt. 198 in Laurel, Maryland is in need of Volunteer Adult mentors and/or tutors. It serves “at promise” youth between the ages of 16 and 24 that are motivated and desire to have a successful life. Tutors are needed to help students in basic math and literacy skills to prepare them for taking the GED or their on-line high school diploma. Tutoring is one-on-one on Monday and/or Thursday afternoons from 3:45 to 5:15. Mentors are needed to be friends to youth who are looking to change their life for the better. Mentors are positive role models and friends that could help with vocational development and/or life skills development. Mentors are matched with one student and meet once a week with their mentee. We currently have students on a waiting list for both tutors and mentors. These are motivated young people working on changing their life and need someone that cares. Help make a difference in a young persons’ life. Training and support is provided.
