Fort Smallwood Students Learn About Downed Wires
To promote electric safety, BGE is visiting local schools and encouraging students to participate in a video challenge.
Fort Smallwood Elementary hosted some special guests on Friday afternoon during an all-school assembly about the importance of electric safety. Some linemen from Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) visited the school to educate students about hazards such as downed wires.
The lesson in electric safety is timely after two boys in Severna Park were treated for burns earlier this week after they reportedly poked a power line with a stick.
BGE is also sponsoring a "Wires Down Video Challenge" for all elementary schools in its service area to encourage students to make their own public service announcement about electric safety. The winner of the challenge will receive up to $10,000 for a school enrichment project.
Participants may enter now through Nov. 30 and create 30- to 45-second videos, using the same lyrics and melody from the original “Wires Down” commercial. Schools will compete against each other during a two-week online public voting period in December and the winners will be announced in January 2013. For more information, visit BGEvideochallenge.com.
