Breast Cancer Awareness Events in North County
From galas to walks to shopping, here's how you can participate, pledge support and donate to the cause in Pasadena and Glen Burnie.
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and whether you love to shop, attend events, walk or run, there are tons of different ways to support the cause. Check out the list below of opportunities to go pink in Glen Burnie, Pasadena and beyond:
Arundel Mills in Hanover will host a health fair on Oct. 5 in conjunction with Baltimore Washington Medical Center (BWMC). From 10 a.m.-2 p.m., women can stop by and get free breast cancer screenings and a Women's Health Kit. The kit features information on breast cancer prevention, plus a free cutting board (for fruits and veggies) and healthy recipes.
An all-you-can-eat fundraiser, Carol's Challenge, will be held Oct. 13 at Bamboo Bernie's in Pasadena to support a local woman enduring her second round of chemotherapy and then surgery. Tickets are $30 per adult and $20 per child (age 10 and younger). Call Patti at 410-761-1168 or email patt-1@hotmail.com for more information.
BWMC will sponsor "Navigating the Lumps and Bumps: It’s Not Always Breast Cancer" on Oct. 24 at the hospital in Glen Burnie. Pre-registration is requested, but the event is free. Call 410-787-4367 or email bwmcpr@bwmc.umms.org.
Here are some events in other areas:
Crofton Bike Doctor is urging participation in the TrekWomen Breast Cancer Awareness Ride on Oct. 13. There are 10-mile and 25-mile rides, and it costs $25 to take part. Click here to register.
Future of Fitness in Crofton will hold a "Bootcamp for Boobies" on Oct. 27. The group has partnered with Sugan G. Komen for a Cure to hold an exercise marathon and raise money for breast cancer research. You can sign up to complete four hours of bootcamps—a different bootcamp every hour—and have people sponsor your effort. You can sign up here. A minimum donation of $200 is required.
In addition to these local events, Maryland residents will be participating in the Brides Against Breast Cancer's wedding dress fashion show in Baltimore, as well as the Beyond the Pink Breast Cancer Hike at Sugarloaf Mountain.
There are even more ways to spread breast cancer awareness this month by supporting national organizations that are fighting for a cure.
Research centers like Susan G. Komen for the Cure are selling pink ribbon merchandise and it’s a twofer—retail therapy and donating to a cause that affects millions.
You can also support breast cancer research by affixing a special stamp to your mail. The U.S. Postal Service has been selling a stamp commemorating breast cancer awareness for the past 15 years. The agency has raised $75 million so far for research programs at the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.
The American Cancer Society’s annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is organized nationwide and so far more than 8 million people have walked for this cause and raised about $460 million.
And you can join people from four continents in a Race for the Cure event organized by Susan G. Komen For The Cure, or an Avon Walk For Breast Cancer event organized by the Avon Foundation for Women.
