About this column:
Angela Balsamo from the Pasadena Business Assocation keeps you in the know with local school news and information delivered biweekly.Recently I talked about the race to find internships this summer for area high school juniors and seniors. What happens when you have a child who would like to find that perfect internship, but there’s one big problem… they don’t know what they want to do? This is a common dilemma, highlighted by the fact that once they do narrow their focus on a specific profession, students are often ill-prepared for the work, both in and out of the classroom, required to pursue that career path. That’s where the 21st Century Education Foundation comes in. Founded for the specific purpose of “enhancing …
The holidays are finally over, a new year is here and now the scrambling begins for many high school juniors and seniors. No, they are not cramming for the SATs (although I’m sure quite a few are). These students are searching for the best internship opportunities possible in fields they are hoping to pursue down the road. Internships are great because they also provide students who are on the fence about future employment goals a chance to see up close and personal the working environment certain professions provide. What a great opportunity to get a feel for a career before committing …
It’s a celebration this month and I bet you didn’t even know it. Don’t feel bad, neither did I. January is the 10th anniversary of National Mentoring Month. According to the National Mentoring Month website, www.nationalmentoringmonth.org, the goal is to focus “national attention on the need for mentors, as well as how each of us – individuals, businesses, government agencies, schools, faith communities and non-profits – can work together to increase the number of mentors.” What a great idea. After all, everyone needs someone to help them, even those who always seem to be surrounded by people…
Schools are officially on hiatus until the New Year. However, just because the kids don’t get up early every day and come home with lots of homework each afternoon doesn’t mean that they have to cease learning for the next week. This is a perfect time for families to reinforce the lessons learned in the classroom.I know that not all households will have at least one parent home next week (after all, work still goes on even when school doesn’t), but for those that do have the ability to be at home… don’t let the kids be couch potatoes! Bundle up, pack a lunch and head out on the road for a …
Isn't teaching all about arming the next generation with the tools they need to battle whatever the world may throw at them? Turning bad into good? Schools are filled with dedicated professionals who are on a mission to prepare their students for "the real world" (and no, I don't mean the television show.) One problem, "the real world" is constantly changing. So the question becomes "How do we, as a community, combat the changes in order to provide students with a consistent message and quality education that will help them throughout their lives?" Anne Arundel County's answer: Signature …
Along with the usual ringing bells, slamming lockers and feet big and small shuffling from room to room, sounds of excitement were also echoing through the halls of schools last week as parents joined their children in the classroom. Traditionally held the week prior to Thanksgiving, American Education Week provides parents the opportunity to see the education process from the inside. Created at the end of World War I to combat a high illiteracy rate, American Education Week originally sought to generate public support for education. Over the years, the mission has evolved to bring students…
