Jack's Opens at Big Vanilla Athletic Club in Pasadena

Grand opening brought in well-wishers and dignitaries for the ribbon-cutting.

Pasadena has a wide variety of dining options, but new to the community is Jack’s, a café of simple foods with complex flavor.

Nestled in Big Vanilla Athletic Club of Pasadena, Jack’s is an inviting café for both members of the club and the community at large. Offering a wide variety of food and beverages, Jack’s is serving up healthy and good quality food for all.

A crowd turned out Saturday to help mark the grand opening and according to Big Vanilla's website, 10 percent of the proceeds are to be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Beginning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the morning, a day of freebies, raffles and fun followed with free frozen yogurt, a moon bounce and a climbing wall for families to enjoy.

 “My daughter had karate practice today and we decided to stop at Jack’s on the way out and try some frozen yogurt,” said Lauri Hesch, of Pasadena.

 In honor of the grand opening, familiar faces to the Pasadena community attended the formal ribbon-cutting ceremony, including District 31 State Delegate Steve Schuh (R-Pasadena), members of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, Fran Schmidt of the North Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce, Sandi Parrish of the Pasadena Business Association, representatives of County Executive John R. Leopold’s office, Nancy Schrum of Councilman Derek Fink (R-District 3) of Pasadena's office and Henry Niesser of Sheriff Ron Bateman's office.

 “We had a lot of public figures here today to celebrate the opening of Jack’s,” said Donna Sage, marketing director for Big Vanilla. “It was good to have so many come out to celebrate the grand opening but to also help the local businesses of Pasadena.”

The birth of Jack’s stemmed from an idea that Larry Ray, the owner of Big Vanilla of Pasadena, had about transforming a space within the gym into a dining area that would be inviting to the community.

Coining the name after a local Pasadena celebrity and former Big Vanilla employee, Tommy Pitts (managing partner) and Ray named the café after the late Jack Lucas. Over 25 members of the Lucas family came out to extend their congratulations.

“We offer simple food, but it’s the layers of flavor that really make it special,” said Pitts.  “We offer a wrap called 'Doug’s wrap' which consists of cream cheese, turkey, pepper jelly, cucumber, roasted red peppers and lettuce- an example of simple food that has a ton of flavor."

The extensive menu offers a wide variety of sweet and savory foods and beverages, complete with breakfast, sandwiches, soups, salads, kids choices, a selection of Starbuck’s beverages, frozen yogurt and smoothies- Jack’s will please any palette.
