Bites Nearby: The Bangkok Oriental

This family-owned Thai restaurant has been operating in Pasadena for nearly 21 years, and offers diners an authentic Southeast Asian dining experience.

The owners of The Bangkok Oriental pride themselves upon providing customers an authentic, Southeast Asian dining experience. The Bangkok Oriental is the creation of two brothers, Ying and Bhee Kuna Prayoon. According to Ying Kuna Prayoon, the siblings settled on Pasadena as a location to bring Thai cooking to an area where there was no Thai restaurant.

“People had approached us saying we needed to open a Thai restaurant here,” Kuna Prayoon said, “We are from Baltimore and knew nothing about the area, but we had heard so many requests for a Thai restaurant in Pasadena that we decided to open the Bangkok Oriental here. We wanted to provide a service to the community, and bring traditional Thai cooking to a place where it did not exist.”

The menu of The Bangkok Oriental offers Thai selections for all tastes, including traditional dishes such as Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles, as well as curries, seafood dishes and vegetarian fare. Spicy food lovers can request their meal be prepared “Thai Hot,” a preparation that is recommended only for those who are true Thai connoisseurs. The spice can be turned up even more by requesting small bowls of an assortment of chilies, which can be added to entrees to adjust heat levels even further.

The Bangkok Oriental has been operating for 21 years in Pasadena, housed in a strip-mall on Ritchie Highway near the Pasadena Crossroads shopping area. The wide selection of Thai cuisine offered makes The Bangkok Oriental a well-suited choice for special occasions, group dinners, and business lunches a like.
