I'm for 1 year minimum mandatory sentences for any government official found guilty of even the lowest level crime...then let bidding go up from there.
You can get 30 days for stealing a candy bar from 7-11.

Wow. Now he'll know what it feels like to have cameras focused on him 24-7. Glad I wasn't a county employee during his tenure.

Another politician in the pocket of someone.

For having sex and emptying his pee pot that was probably overflowing and had no choice. I think he was overly charged with this. Look at all the liberals in office who break the laws or turn a blind eye to laws..

I wonder if he will remember this statement and PAY UP!! I for one do not want the money coming out of my pocket!!
Posted: 10/17/2012 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Embattled Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold has agreed to reimburse the county government for attorney fees should there be an unfavorable ruling in a civil case filed against him. In a signed letter to the Self Insurance Fund Committee, which is responsible for presiding over settlement payments and the cost of civil actions against the County, the County Executive specifically outlined the parameters of such a payment despite his legal entitlement to a government-funded defense. "I am confident that when the jury hears all of the evidence, the result will be the same as a similar claim that has already been dismissed," said Leopold. "I want the taxpayers to rest assured, however, knowing ahead of time that I would never allow them to pay my attorney fees if there is an unfavorable court ruling." Leopold generated nearly $21,000 in legal fees while mounting a defense against a discrimination civil lawsuit by a former county employee. He also faces criminal charges of official misconduct. Ms. Carr, will you please do some digging on the status of his pension, and who (if anyone) is taking steps either to revoke it or to guarantee it? Taxpayers want to know...
D. Frank Smith (Editor) March 14, 2013 at 05:56 pm
Mike, that topic came up at the County Council (albeit, indirectly) in February after Leopold resigned. The Capital did a story on it here: http://www.capitalgazette.com/news/government/anne-arundel-council-defeats-pension-bill-leopold-to-keep-pension/article_0a0b208d-433c-592b-8554-798c1add331b.html
In short, he will likely keep his pension because he resigned, and this bill referenced above was defeated.

Totally ridiculous use of taxpayer money. There are drug dealers, wife beaters, and other thugs that get less time than this for more heinous crimes. He'll do about 12 days in the joint and 12 days on house arrest. He gets 10 days off his sentence right off the bat (5 days for each month) and then will get day for day for good behavior. Also, you've got to remember that he can ask a 3 judge panel for a sentence reconsideration. And, given the short term of his sentence, they are likely to expedite that hearing.

How much time did Ted Kennedy get for drunk driving, leaving a woman in a car to drown and leaving the scene??!! Leopold did a lot of good for this county

When he completes his 30 days in detention, maybe he will decide to do his community service there as well. Mary

The jail time is light, but the fine is substantial. Will he actually have to pay this, or is there wiggle room here as there is with the jail sentence?
Roberta Salamon March 14, 2013 at 08:14 pm
I read where his pension amounts to about $8,000/year. I find that hard to believe but that is what I read. I understand that by his resigning instead of being let go, he is entitled to his pension that is my understanding.
John March 14, 2013 at 09:03 pm
Keeping his pension because he resigned is a bit like telling a bank robber he can keep the money as long as he retires from robbing banks.

So, you cite another media outlet for your story and then when someone asks a question you refer them to another news outlet? Do you guys do any actual reporting anymore? Patch has really gone down hill in the last few months ...
George March 15, 2013 at 11:55 am
Should be a whole lot more than 30 days. But alas this will be one time when I don't mind my tax money being used for Leo to romance with his new "girl"friends.
George March 15, 2013 at 01:57 pm
Ahh, no suprruse to see this. When one's actions can't be defended, there's always the "but everybody does it" ticket to play.
What exactly did Leopold do that was so go for AA county? Besides getting in bed with his girlfriends at taxpayer expense, he ceratinly slept a lot with that crook Cordish. Leo made Big Janet look like a woman of the common people.
hankb1015 March 15, 2013 at 04:21 pm
The sad thing is, people in the banking/financial industry have done far, far worse than Leopold, and haven't even been indicted. Money laundering, mortgage fraud, securities fraud, and other crimes on a huge scale. Our fearless Atty. General has just said straight out that they are "too big to prosecute". Ditto it seems for all the so-called "regulators" who aided and abetted those crimes.
So, the real deal in the USA: Little people- rot in jail for even a petty crime. Big people- escape ALL consequences, and get a bailout too. Medium sized people like Leopold- get a light sentence and a fine. Law and order? At this point, it's a joke.

Frank,
Thank you for the response. While the linked article is useful information, and while I see what you say about this issue "indirectly" being addressed, I'm interested in the press pushing the politicians directly for their stances on the Leopold pension issue. I want the press to get people on record as to whether they would support revoking his pension and benefits. The notion that anyone can commit any crime in office and protect his pension by retiring before he gets fired is appalling. For starters, in the sea of laws that exist, I don't believe it is true (or at least, cut and dried). But IF it is actually true, then we need a law/referendum to fix it. I think this is a great opportunity for the press to do some good. I both hope and ask that the press acts to force the issue. Regards, Mike

I have a question. If John Leopold has a catheter, how exactly was he doing the things behind the bowling alley and in the shopping center parking lot that he was convicted of. Were his mistresses sucking on the hose? How did his little thing perform with a hose coming out of it?
Lynn Smith March 16, 2013 at 12:00 am
He will do all 30 days in jail. When you are sentenced to jail time followed by house arrest the "good" days come off the house arrest portion of the sentence.
Joan March 16, 2013 at 05:46 pm
He deserves every second of this. He is a disgrace. I know FIRSTHAND about Leopold.
Mike H March 17, 2013 at 12:16 pm
Are you serious? He used county employees for removing opponents campaign signs and used them for picking up his mistress and standing look out while he banged her...Paid them with OUR MONEY! This isn't about politics, this is theft from taxpayers. I am even more pissed off because I voted for the man.

In the larger viewpoint. These actions, while hurtful to the individuals who were there did not have to follow the direction of somebody who was asking them to act in ways not sanctioned by law. Historically in World War II we held the officers and soldiers who acted under Hitler in the concentration camps as guilty as the people who ordered the action. I am not saying that is correct, but people have the obligation to stand up and refuse to carry out immoral and criminal actions, not just go along with them because the chief said so. Whine all we want about this situation but both parties do these kind of things and until people say no it will stop. Potential Jail time won't stop people who abuse others, only refusing to be part of the abuse will stop it. My two cents. You also want to remember if you make it too easy to convict and railroad a political figure, every political figure will be railroaded by their opponents. both sides are guilty of this as well, and we have have lost some good people over the years on trumped up, ridiculous and meaningless stuff.
Katie March 19, 2013 at 02:46 pm
He abused his office by having county employees perform acts that were clearly not part of their job description. Emptying his pee pot? Those folks aren't nurses or health care providers. If they were I am sure they would be somewhere making real money to do that. As for the police? Overtime is expensive and using that payroll for his sexual proclivities is inexcusable.
Had that been you or I? We would have been fired on the spot and then prosecuted. I doubt we would have been treated so leniently. And yes, I was an AA County resident for 16 years and I know how they operate.

One less P.O.S. in office! Thirty day sentence very minor,I agree should be at least a year! His lifestyle will go on unchanged! A minor glitch in his life! Now if we could nail more of these worthless Bastards!
