Frugal Family: Money-Saving Tips for Vacation

Headed out of town this month? Frugal Family has some suggestions for ways to save money when you're on vacation.

1.  Visit the websites of the attractions you plan to visit before your trip.

Taking the time to visit the websites of the museums, theme parks and other tourist attractions you plan to check out will save you money in the long run.  Most of these places have coupons on their website, special admission deals at certain times of the day, or certain money-saving events on their calendar.  Taking a few minutes to research and plan accordingly can save you big bucks!

2.  Get recommendations from locals, or friends who have visited your destination.

The beauty of the social media age is that you can ask questions to the masses and get some great tips!  Check out local message boards and web forums for suggestions from everything from the best restaurants to great free activities in the area.  Also, ask your lists of friends or followers if they have been to your destination - sometimes asking people who have gone somewhere before you will yield some great information!

3.  Search for the website or events calendar of your destination online.

Often, cities and tourist areas have websites that contain travel information and calendars of events.  You may find some free events such as outdoor concerts, guided tours, festivals or farmers markets to attend.

4.  Tell your hotel or restaurant if you're celebrating a special occasion.

Anniversary trip?  Birthday dinner?  When you make a reservation, don't be afraid to let the hotel or restaurant know that you're celebrating something special.  Sometimes, special perks like a better view or the best table in the house make your vacation feel even more relaxing.

5.  Create a packing list to prevent having to purchase forgotten items.

It's easy to leave items like sunscreen, aloe, reading material or pain reliever out of your suitcase.  Tourist areas often charge more for these frequently-forgotten items.  Use a packing-list generator like Pack Whiz, or write one by hand to make sure you remember all the essentials.
