NACAC Hosts Youth-Focused Retrospective on the Civil Rights Movement

Arundel County, Maryland  - The North Arundel County Alumnae Chapter (NACAC), Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will host “The Future has a Past: A Youth-Focused Retrospective on the Civil Rights Movement,"  on January 26, 2013 from 2:00 to 5:00 at the Wiley H. Bates Legacy Center, 1101 Smithville Street, Annapolis, Maryland  21401.

Civil rights icons and community activists will share their experiences, reflect on the past, and contemplate our future. Local and regional legends and foot-soldiers of the Civil Rights Movement will engage youth by sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and memorabilia to remind them of the hard fought for privileges, opportunities and rights some take for granted.  The event will also include topic-focused group discussions, chats with legends, and viewings of the movies "Bringing Back Bates", the story of Wiley Bates High School; "An Ordinary Hero", featuring 1960's Freedom Rider and activists Joan Mulholland; and "Pip and Zastrow: An American Friendship", featuring local civil rights activist and legend Zastrow Simms.

"The goal is to help youth understand and appreciate the sacrifices and accomplishments that made President Obama’s election and re-election possible.  In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “If we are to move FORWARD, we must go back and rediscover those precious values. . ."  said Chapter President Tonia Powell.  "We encourage area youth to join us for this thought provoking event."

Featured guests include: The Honorable Donna Edwards, Maryland Congresswoman; The Honorable Clayton Greene, Maryland Court of Appeals; 1960s Civil Rights activist and Freedom Rider, Joan Trumpauer Mulholland;  historian and film maker, Janice Hayes-Williams; 1976 Olympic medal winner, Lloyd Keaser; author, politician, and civil rights activist, Honorable Dorothy Bailey; author and attorney, Karen Gooden and Annapolis legend, Zastrow Simms.  See the attached one-sided and two-sided fliers for more details.
