UPDATE (11 a.m.)—A Baltimore man died early Thursday morning after crashing his van into a tree on Mountain Road near Fairwood Road in Pasadena, according to police.
According to a press release from Anne Arundel County police, they received two complaints of an intoxicated driver in a red Honda minivan with a Maryland tag at 12:56 a.m. Thursday. The van was reportedly crossing into Anne Arundel County from Baltimore City on Fort Smallwood Road near Cabot Road. A second complaint reported the same vehicle on Fort Smallwood Road near Kenton Road.
Police said an officer from the eastern district spotted the van driving erratically and swerving across the roadway on Fort Smallwood Road near Edwin Raynor Boulevard in Pasadena. According to the press release, the van sped up and out of sight when the officer turned on his emergency lights and siren.
The van was discovered at 1:05 a.m. after officers checked the area where the van was headed at Mountain Road near Fairwood Road. According to police, the van struck a tree causing fatal injuries to the driver—the only person in the vehicle. On Thursday just before 11 a.m., police announced the driver was Amon Samuel Whitee, 25, of Edith Court in Baltimore.
Police said the evidence suggests excessive speed is a primary cause but it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were also contributing factors. The investigation is ongoing.
