State troopers stopped more than 11,000 vehicles over Memorial Day weekend, according to a report from Maryland State Police.
Police offered these preliminary statistics from the weekend:
- 8,628 traffic citations issued
- 5,421 warnings issued
- 107 motorists found to be operating a motor vehicle while impaired
- 87 arrested for drug offenses
- 111 arrested for other criminal violations
Maryland State Police announced in advance that officers would be "turning up the heat on enforcement" for the holiday weekend to reduce the number of crashes in which speed, alcohol or other aggressive driving violations contributed.
Troopers will continue to focus on impaired, aggressive and distracted drivers as well as proper use of safety restraints in the coming months, police said.
