Police say would-be copper thieves ran into trouble when the pickup truck they were in became mired in mud, requiring a tow truck to free their getaway vehicle.
Anne Arundel County Police were called to the 7200 block of Park Circle Drive in Hanover at about 11:04 p.m. Wednesday on a reported copper theft. They arrived to see a tow truck pulling an older model Ford pick-up truck from a wooded area behind the business.
Investigators believe three suspects drove behind the business into a dark, secluded wooded area. From there, they cut their way into a fenced storage area, removed copper cables from generators and attempted to drive away, but their vehicle became stuck in the mud. The suspects called a tow company to remove them from the muddy area.
The officers who arrived on scene arrested two suspects; a third suspect fled before the officers arrived. Patrol officers, K-9 and aviation searched the vicinity, but were unable to locate the third suspect.
Both suspects were charged with burglary, possession of burglar tools, theft, destruction of property and possession of CDS paraphernalia.
The two men arrested are Robert Oliff, 51, of 8503 Holly Street in Laurel, and Dennis Asmussen, 41, of 7810 Clark Road C77 in Jessup.
