UPDATE: Woman Dies in Accident on Fort Smallwood Road

A car with two women in it struck a tree and the passenger later died from her injuries, according to police.

UPDATE (8:35 p.m.)—Police said Catherine May Guthrie, 81, died Sunday as the result of injuries sustained in a car accident on Fort Smallwood Road in Pasadena.

According to a press release from Anne Arundel County police, officers from the Eastern District responded to a single car accident in the 7400 block of Fort Smallwood Road just after 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Two women suffered injuries in the accident, according to Anne Arundel County Fire Chief Michael Cox.

Police said Guthrie, who was a passenger in the car, was entrapped and had to be removed by fire department personnel. Cox said it took firefighters about 20 minutes to remove her from the wreckage.

Officials said Guthrie sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Police said the driver, whose injuries were not life threatening, was taken to Johns Hopkins Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment.

The police investigation revealed that the car was traveling east on Fort Smallwood Road, left the roadway for unknown reasons and struck a tree on the passenger front. Police said neither speed nor alcohol appears to be factors in this crash and the investigation is ongoing.
