Michael J. Wagner Sr. of Ferndale, who represented Anne Arundel County in the House of Delegates and then the state Senate, died Thursday morning from cancer, reports the Maryland Gazette.

Wagner, 72, founded the annual Take Back Our Streets campaign to help families in need during the holidays. He was honored at the Anne Arundel County Sports Hall of Fame banquet 2011 for helping to launch the organization and for his support of youth athletics, the newspaper said.

According to the Maryland State Archives, the Democrat served in the House of Delegates from 1975 to 1977. He then served in the Maryland Senate from 1977 to 1979, and again from 1983 to 1992.

In business, Wagner was the president of Executive Caterers, and president and owner of Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, a popular venue for weddings and other events.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
