Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) recognizes educators, employees and volunteers each month from September to June during the school year. Awards are presented at Board of Education meetings and Patch is pleased to announce the honorees.
The February "Employee of the Month" is Sharon Shadle, a kindergarten teacher assistant at Richard Henry Lee Elementary in Glen Burnie. According to the AACPS website, the Employee of the Month is chosen by a committee made up of members of the Anne Arundel County Retired School Personnel Association (AARSPA).
Here is the text of the speech presented at the Feb. 6 meeting in honor of Shadle:
Oftentimes the most effective way to describe an Employee of the Month is to quote directly from the candidate’s nomination form and such is the case today. Using the endorsers’ words adds a personal touch that comes directly from the heart.
“When we found out that our Kindergarten Teacher Assistant had been nominated for Employee of the Month, our entire team let out a cheer! We as a kindergarten team depend on her unique ability to know what needs to be done and see that it is accomplished. Sharon Shadle devotes her time to providing daily small group instruction for the neediest kindergarteners at Richard Henry Elementary School. She makes suggestions and then plans her lessons to accommodate all different levels of abilities. The children all benefit from her high level of understanding of how to teach the basic skills needed for success in school. Children love to go with Mrs. Shadle as they have so much fun with her! After spending time in small group sessions, many students are able to meet grade-level expectations by the end of the year. She collaborates effectively with each kindergarten teacher on her team, the reading teachers, and special educators to plan and consult regarding student progress. She is self-reflective, and embraces new challenges as she is always looking for ways to improve her teaching.
Mrs. Shadle is super organized. She is always willing to work with any staff member who needs help – whether answering phones for the secretary, filing for teachers, assisting with the children at lunch, helping with dismissal or taking over a class as necessary until a substitute arrives. Sharon actually started working at Richard Henry Lee has a substitute, the best ever! Everyone hated to lose her as a sub, but the kindergarten gained an irreplaceable assistant.
Mrs. Shadle is a longtime member of this community. She has been associated with our school for many years in so many ways – volunteer, substitute teacher, and now kindergarten assistant. She always maintains a positive attitude and smile for everyone she meets. Her cheerful attitude, genuine concern and respect for all persons she meets make her an employee to remember. She truly deserves recognition, although she would never think what she does is “out of the ordinary.” Instead, she just believes that she “does what she can.” We know she does far more than anyone can imagine and she does it with a smile. She brightens our day and we are so proud of her!” From: The Richard Henry Lee Kindergarten and Special Education Team.
Sharon Shadle – you are truly deserving of this award. On behalf of the students, teachers and staff at Anne Arundel County Public Schools and your Richard Henry Lee family, we congratulate you for being selected Employee of the Month for February 2013.
