Lake Shore Student Is Maryland ‘Young Author’ Winner

A third-grader won first place in the short story category of the state competition.

Lake Shore Elementary third-grader Abigail McFarland won first place in the 2011-12 State of Maryland International Reading Association Council (SoMIRAC) Young Author Contest, according to the newsletter for Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

McFarland received first place honors for her short story A Fairy Tale After All. She is taught by Melissa Kelly at Lake Shore Elementary.

The SoMIRAC honors young authors in second through eighth grade who write poetry and short stories. Winning young authors, their teachers, and family will be invited to the Young Author’s Reception, featuring celebrated children’s author Lulu Delacre, a bilingual author and illustrator. The reception will be held at the Baltimore Marriott Hunt Valley Inn.

McFarland was among who were named winners in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools 2011-2012 Young Authors Contest.
