Summer To Start Early for Public School Students

Due to the mild winter, most Anne Arundel County Public Schools will close June 8 for students.

County students and teachers probably didn't get much skiing in during the winter due to the lack of snow and warmer temperatures. However, they will get an earlier start on summer vacation. The last day of the school year is June 8 for students and June 11 for teachers, Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) announced on Thursday.

The change is due to AACPS only using two of the four days built into the calendar for emergency closings. Schools were closed Aug. 29 and 30 due to the remnants of Tropical Storm Irene, according to a press release.

Originally, the school calendar had students in school until June 12 and teachers working until June 13.

Under the current school calendar, the last day of school for graduating seniors is May 31.

Due to summer construction projects at six county schools, the Maryland State Department of Education approved one-day waivers to the state’s 180-school day requirement for Central Middle School and Annapolis, Broadneck, Four Seasons, Point Pleasant, and Woodside elementary schools, according to the press release.

The one-day waiver means that the school year for students at these schools will end on June 7. Those schools will also open the 2012-2013 school year on Aug. 28—one day later than other students, according to the release.

Any additional days needed between now and June for inclement weather would alter the last day of school accordingly.

Correction: The dates pertaining to the original AACO school calendar have been corrected.

I thought it was only 2 days early. Originally June 12th now Friday June 8th? My kids and (I) are excited!

Carrie, it is 2 days (the 8th) but some schools have waivers due to construction

It is only two days early. The 12th is a Tuesday, so the 11th and 12th were unused inclement weather days. So Friday the 8th is now the last day.

Sara, yes, you are correct. I've fixed it and added a correction at the bottom. I had clicked on one of the calendars on AACPS website and got those dates, still trying to figure it out- sorry for the confusion and I've added a correction.
