Lake Shore Softball’s Under 10 Green Slime team capped their undefeated season Friday night with a 6-5 victory over the Orange Fireballs in the championship game at Bodkin Park.
The Green Slime entered Friday’s game with a 14-0 record and a perfect season on the line. Abby Mollick started things off for the Slime from the first at bat. She hit a ball to left field for a home run to give the Green Slime an early 1-0 lead.
Despite the early lead, the Orange Fireballs battled the Slime and took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the third. The Fireballs were led by some outstanding fielding from pitcher and third baseman Lexi Myers.
The Fireballs put up a solid offensive performance, but it would be short-lived as the Green Slime battled back in the top of the sixth.
Down 4-5, Emily Brown got the comeback started for the Slime with a two-out triple. She then scored to tie things up thanks to a single from Kate O’Sullivan on the next at bat.
Kaylie Beatty followed with a hit to center field that scored O’Sullivan giving the Green Slime their first lead since the first inning.
The Fireballs were unable to score any more runs in the bottom of the sixth, and the Green Slime finished their perfect season with an under 10 Lake Shore Softball championship.
“I have been coaching for 11 years and this was probably one of the best teams I have coached,” said Green Slime coach Mike Jacobs. “They were able to overcome a lot of things this year, as you could see in this championship game here. They did what they needed to do to win the game. And that is the way they have been all year.”
