As part of our new Smart Spending series, Patch wants to uncover the true going rate for various goods and services in town, so you'll know exactly how much you should pay for what you need. Help us out by replying in the comments.
This week: How much do lawn services cost? How much do you pay for your lawn service? And what does that cover—just mowing, or does it cover weeding, pruning, planting? Please share in the comments below—we promise we won't judge you! And if you've got a lawn service you love, tell us that too. This is the first of an ongoing series, "What's the Going Rate for..." where Patch seeks to uncover how much things cost so you never have to ask again.

Here are some family activities you can do to foster environmentalism. Sponsored by Sony.
Very few events are celebrated around the globe, but Earth Day is. This year, it’s come and gone. But we’re here to ask: What can we do to show our love of the earth on that day, and every day? On May 31, Sony will release After Earth, an action-packed movie that takes place 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity to leave. It’s the kind of scenario that makes you want to donate to Greenpeace, recycle everything, and start biking every where, immediately. So, in honor of Earth Day, Patch has teamed up with Sony to present these ideas for making every day Earth Day. How can we make every day Earth Day? Begin with little things. Easy things. Obvious things. Things we take for granted each day, and use and/or abuse because of …

In her column, the county executive stated she will veto a massive bill that would establish a fee to pay for a state-mandated stormwater runoff management plan.
Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman issued the following statement regarding her intent to veto the County Council's stormwater bill, which was approved April 15. When I moved to Anne Arundel County over two decades ago it was because of, among other things, the beauty of our County and the Chesapeake Bay. This natural beauty is why many of us are here and why we attract tourists from around the globe. Protecting this precious resource is not an option, it is an obligation. We all must do our part to do the things necessary to keep our waterways healthy and thriving, which brings me to Anne Arundel County Bill No. 2-13: Stormwater Management – Watershed Protection and Restoration Special Revenue Fund and Program. The impetus for …

April Fools Day is one of the trickiest days of the year. How do you celebrate April 1?
April 1 is my dad's favorite holiday. Yes, it is a holiday to him. How else would you describe a day where you can put a loved one on edge simply because they know you like to pull pranks. April Fools Day is the day we've set aside to both celebrate and avoid our resident pranksters. Here are a few of the best pranks my dad has managed to pull off over the years: Of course, there are plenty of pranks you can view online. The Huffington Post rounded up some of the best pranks of the year. I'll add Google's "treasure map overlay" on its Google Maps function as one of my personal favorites of this holiday—check the photo with this post for a localized preview. I'm curious about your favorite April Fool's Day jokes and tricks. Now, I'm not …

After a recent incident at Arundel Middle where a teacher confronted a student about behavior issues, Patch wants to know what you think about the best way to keep a classroom under control.
A video surfaced last week online depicting a confrontation between a student and teacher in a classroom at Arundel Middle School in Odenton. More than 60 comments on Odenton-Severn Patch express readers' reactions to the video and the way the situation was handled. A teacher was placed on administrative leave after an incident that became public in a video showing what appeared to be a confrontation with students regarding behavior in the classroom. The school system launched an investigation. Arundel Middle School Principal Yolanda Clark said in a letter to parents that the teacher had shown "poor judgment" in her behavior toward students. "This behavior is inconsistent with that which we expect of our educators, and our school system is…

Bills in the House of Delegates and Senate would create a new standard where all dog owners are presumed liable for dog attacks, regardless of the breed of the animal.
Legislation overriding a Maryland Court of Appeals ruling that made landlords liable for pit bull attacks, and put owners at risk of being evicted or having to give up their dogs, will be heard Wednesday by the House Judiciary Committee. Identical House and Senate bills seek to create a new standard where all dog owners in civil action cases, regardless of the dog’s breed, are presumed liable for attacks unless owners can prove they did everything possible to avoid the attack, said Sen. Brian Frosh, sponsor of the Senate bill. It would also reverse the strict liability on landlords. “The interest groups: pet owners, landlords, and animal rights groups are pleased with it,” said Frosh, a Montgomery County Democrat who is also chairman of …

Despite playing in New England, fans came in big numbers to watch Ravens earn the franchise's second Super Bowl trip. The head coach and players noticed.
John Harbaugh smiled plenty throughout Monday's news conference. Considering his team is headed to the Super Bowl a week from Sunday, that's no surprise. But the Ravens coach really beamed when the conversation turned to Baltimore's fans. Harbaugh and his team were both delighted at the large number of Baltimore fans that went up to New England and watched the Ravens beat the Patriots, 28-13, in last Sunday's AFC title game. "We might have had one-eighth of the crowd, which is really a high number for a visiting AFC Championship game. That speaks so much about our fans," Harbaugh said when talking to the media Monday in Owings Mills. "For all of those people to make that trip up there at this time of year to support their Ravens is just—…

After the Newtown, CT school shooting, Maryland legislators are looking at a number of ways to make schools safer.
According to Annapolis Patch, delegates from Anne Arundel County are introducing legislation on Tuesday, Jan. 22 in hopes of increasing security and mental health services at public schools across the state. The proposed bill would also pay for an armed resource officer at each school. "If you really understand public schools in Maryland, you know this: They are becoming increasingly more difficult for classroom teachers because discipline is lacking at home and teachers are spending an increasing amount of time maintaining discipline in the classroom," said Del. Nic Kipke (R-Pasadena). In Montgomery County, Councilman Craig Rice (D-Dist. 2) of Germantown, a vocal advocate of school resource officers stationed in schools, told a room full …
