The county executive now has a Facebook page, shortly after creating a Twitter account.
Patch reported a couple weeks ago that Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman created an official Twitter account, and now she is trying to reach constituents on the dominant social media platform Facebook. Her page had less than 50 "Likes" by early Thursday afternoon, but if it grows like her Twitter account, there will be hundreds getting updates from her in a matter of days. Patch also featured a video last month of Neuman sharing how shocked she was to find the county executive's office lacked a computer and Internet connection when she took over. Although most of her posts have been photos from recent public appearances, she has featured a few pieces of big news including Tuesday's resignation letter from Police Chief Larry …

The county executive is assembling a team of investigators from Montgomery and Harford counties to look into allegations about the Anne Arundel County Police Department.
Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman announced Friday that she is assembling an inter-county task force of investigators from Montgomery and Harford counties to investigate allegations surrounding the Anne Arundel County Police Department. "Problems in our Police Department continue to keep surfacing," said Neuman, in a press release. "I have zero tolerance for inappropriate behavior of our police department if it exists." The team will look into procedures, protocol and what Neuman called "inappropriate anonymous correspondence" based on claims without evidence. Rumors of confidential information being leaked will also be investigated, according to the statement. This comes just over a week after County Councilman Jamie Benoit (D-…

Cox takes the top spot after the retirement of former chief Robert Ray.
Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman appointed Michael Cox Jr., who has more than 25 years of experience, as acting fire chief on Wednesday. The announcement came the same day as the retirement of former chief Robert Ray became active. Ray, who held the position of chief since 2008 in Anne Arundel County, announced his plans to retire in early April so he could spend more time with his family. Cox, an Edgewater resident, started his career in firefighting at the age of 16 when he joined the Woodland Beach Volunteer Fire Department. He is a certified fire officer, an emergency medical technician-paramedic and an emergency services instructor. He also holds three degrees in fire and emergency services. "Chief Cox has demonstrated a …
The budget includes a 3 percent raise for county employees—the first since 2010.
County Executive Laura Neuman’s budget for the coming year lays out a series of employee raises that she said were overdue. Neuman presented her budget Wednesday morning at the Arundel Center to a packed house in the County Council’s chambers. She said this budget would usher in “a fresh start” for Anne Arundel County, one in which people and infrastructure would be given the attention they deserved. “For too long our county has not made investing in people and infrastructure a priority, and that has resulted in a deteriorating organization,” Neuman said. The executive began her speech by describing the conditions of the office she inherited from former Executive John R. Leopold. Neuman said the office was “sullen and silent” when she …

County Executive Laura Neuman recently set up an official Twitter account, as one of the latest moves to modernize the office in Anne Arundel County.
It is well-documented how shocked Laura Neuman was when she walked into her office as newly appointed executive for Anne Arundel County, only to find the room was without a computer—or even access to the Internet, for that matter. Within a day, she had a computer and was online. She recently jumped into another realm that is foreign to county executives in Anne Arundel County, but almost standard for politicians across the country and state; Neuman is now on the microblogging platform Twitter. Neuman's office confirmed to Patch an account established for the executive, where she and her staff will share information and interact with residents through the social media site. She had eight tweets as of Thursday afternoon, including the …
In her column, the county executive stated she will veto a massive bill that would establish a fee to pay for a state-mandated stormwater runoff management plan.
Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman issued the following statement regarding her intent to veto the County Council's stormwater bill, which was approved April 15. When I moved to Anne Arundel County over two decades ago it was because of, among other things, the beauty of our County and the Chesapeake Bay. This natural beauty is why many of us are here and why we attract tourists from around the globe. Protecting this precious resource is not an option, it is an obligation. We all must do our part to do the things necessary to keep our waterways healthy and thriving, which brings me to Anne Arundel County Bill No. 2-13: Stormwater Management – Watershed Protection and Restoration Special Revenue Fund and Program. The impetus for …

The county executive explained the recent shake-up of personnel and economic opportunities for local businesses in Anne Arundel County.
Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman made headlines during her first month of office, most notably for the resignations and appointments of several key county personnel. She took the opportunity at the West County Chamber of Commerce annual meeting Wednesday to talk about how she hopes the recent changes will help the county government serve the taxpayers. At least a few members of the business community gasped when they learned the county executive's office lacked a computer and Internet connection until last month. Even more were shocked when Neuman told them the department of planning and zoning has a DOS-based computer system, which was the main operating system for computers during the 1980s to the mid-1990s. "Do you know what …

The West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce commended the work of a few members, and heard from Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman.
The West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce commended several businesses, nonprofits and volunteers at its annual meeting Wednesday, and also saw an appearance by Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman. More than 100 people gathered at the Four Points by Sheraton in Linthicum to honor some of the most cooperative organizations in west Anne Arundel County. Neuman, slotted as guest speaker for the event, opened with a sobering assessment of the local government, but said she looked forward to cultivating business opportunities for the county. "We are 20 years behind in county government," Neuman said. "I know it sounds negative, but it's not negative—it's an opportunity." She mentioned upgrades—including the first computer for an …
