Finance Program Reaches Anne Arundel Schools

Students in Anne Arundel County are learning personal finance skills with the help of a computer program.

Kids are being introduced to computer technology earlier in life, and schools in Maryland are trying to teach kids how to afford the smartphones, laptops and flatscreen televisions they want with lessons on personal finances. In 2010, the Maryland State Department of Education started requiring schools to provide financial education, beginning in September 2011. Each jurisdiction in the state was tasked with implementing the un-funded requirements. Junior Achievement of Central Maryland (JACMD) has helped area schools meet the requirement, and now students in Anne Arundel County are learning how to save and spend with the computer program JA Finance Park. Input Wanted: AACPS 'Day of Action' Set for June 8

The "Day of Action" is an opportunity for parents to share ideas with school officials on effectively advancing education in Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

Do you have an idea that could help teachers and students excel? School officials in Anne Arundel County will hear such strategies in a "Day of Action" parents convention on June 8, in Annapolis. Parents from public housing communities around the county are invited to the event, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, at 121 South Villa Avenue. A panel will discuss education topics, and parents can participate in several sessions on supporting their students. Parents can also win prizes for participating in the activities and games, according to an AACPS press release. 6 More Schools Earn 'Green' Status

A total of six Anne Arundel County schools received their first Maryland Green School certifications, making 48 green schools and centers in the county.

Six schools in Anne Arundel County were added to the distinguished list of Maryland Green Schools, the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) announced on Friday. Schools that earned first-time recognition were Edgewater, Lake Shore, Overlook, and Severn elementary schools; and Annapolis and Magothy River middle schools, according to a release. In addition, five other schools earned either their second or third certifications. Folger McKinsey earned its third certification, while Benfield, Pasadena, South Shore, and Tyler Heights elementary schools were each certified for the second time. Newsweek Ranks 3 Anne Arundel Schools Among Top 1,000

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday and a fourth school was included in the top 2,000.

On mobile? You can see interactive map here. Newsweek ranked three high schools in Anne Arundel County among the top 1,000 in the country, and a fourth among the top 2,000. Broadneck High School is highest on the list, ranking 722, followed by Arundel High School at 840, then South River High School at 938 and Annapolis High School at 1,843. You can see the details about the four ranked schools in Anne Arundel County, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in this interactive map. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools, with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. Orioles Host Screening of "42" for Local Baseball Players

Nearly 300 baseball and softball players from Anne Arundel County high schools will watch the film for free in Linthicum on Thursday.

The Baltimore Orioles and Major League Baseball (MLB) are hoping to inspire local athletes with a private screening of "42" about Hall of Fame player Jackie Robinson on Thursday. Nearly 300 baseball and softball players from high schools in Anne Arundel County will watch the movie at Hoyt's West Nursery Cinemas in Linthicum. Before the screening, they will also hear from former Oriole Ken Dixon on Robinson's impact by breaking the color barrier in baseball. Athletes from Annapolis, Arundel, Broadneck, Chesapeake, Glen Burnie, Meade, North County, Northeast, Old Mill, Severna Park, South River and Southern High Schools will attend the screening. South River’s Jodie Hogan Named Teacher of the Year

Summit School’s Debora Coates Consugar won the honor of Private Schools Teacher of the Year at the Excellence in Education Awards on Monday night.

Superintendent Reminds Students of Alcohol, Drug Policy Heading Into Graduation Season

Students in Anne Arundel County can be prohibited from prom and graduation activities if found in violation of the system's drug and alcohol policy.

Superintendent Kevin Maxwell cautioned students and parents Wednesday about the alcohol and drug policy for Anne Arundel County Public Schools, heading into graduation season. In a letter to parents of soon-to-be graduates, Maxwell reminded families that students can be prohibited from school events if found possessing, consuming or distributing alcohol and drugs, even off of school property. "I do not want to see what should be a great time in the life of graduating seniors marred by immature and unwise decisions," Maxwell said in the letter, included above. County High Schools Ranked in Top 9 Percent for Providing College-Level Exams

Students in Anne Arundel County high schools are among the most tested in the state and country.

All 12 public high schools in Anne Arundel County were ranked in the top 9 percent of schools preparing students for college, in a national index by The Washington Post. Eleven of the schools ranked in the top 50 in Maryland for testing students with Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate and other college-level exams. "This index makes it crystal clear that across our county, more students are more prepared for college than they have ever been," said Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) Superintendent Kevin Maxwell, in a press release. Skylar Marion, 15, Dead After Hit-and-Run

Police are still looking for the driver of the Ford Expedition involved in the hit-and-run on Friday night.

Anne Arundel County police announced Skylar Marion, the Pasadena teen struck in a hit-and-run near his home Friday night, died Monday. Police originally reported that two teens were struck by a 1997-2002 Ford Expedition on the 4500 block of Mountain Road, which is the same block of Skylar's home. The second victim was sent in serious condition to Johns Hopkins Children's Hospital, and there has been no update of her status. Police said the driver is still at-large and the investigation is ongoing. Any information regarding this case can be directed to the Traffic Safety Section at 410-222-8573.
