Maryland General Assembly Notebook 2013

Miller Gets His Bust

A state senator wants a new state bird; one man's technolgical fortress is his castle; and the Senate president feels snubbed by Obama.

It's not a statue in front of the office building that bares his name but Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller did receive a bust of himself this week courtesy of the Regional Manufacturing Institute. Sen. Kathy Klausmeier, a Perry Hall Democrat, gave a sneak preview of the small, light-weight bust of Miller moments before presenting it to the Senate's top dog. "You can't have too much Mike Miller," Klausmeier said. The technology is similar to what was used in a scene of Jurassic Park 3 where a copy of a velociraptor's larynx was recreated. The institute offered legislators in Annapolis the opportunity to have themselves scanned into a computer and get busts of themselves. Miller seemed impressed with the petite bust but joked that it …

Jones Touchdown Means Free Furniture in Maryland

One local furniture chain will be reimbursing more than a half-million in weekend sales after Ravens speedster Jacoby Jones returned the third-quarter kickoff for a touchdown in Super Bowl XLVII Sunday.

Some lucky Baltimore-area residents enjoyed their new couches a whole lot more in the second half of Sunday's Super Bowl. Because Jacoby Jones returned the opening kickoff of the third quarter for a touchdown, Gardiner's Furniture will fulfill a promise to refund all purchases made in their stores over the weekend. Sports blog Deadspin has a video of the 108-yard return, the longest play in NFL postseason history. On its Facebook page Sunday night, Gardiner's Furniture posted: That was amazing! Furniture is FREE! If you made a purchase this weekend, it's your lucky day. Go Ravens! John J. Campion Jr. wrote: "Thank you Jacoby Jones for our new table set!!!!" Kalea Kaiser posted: "Yeah baby! So glad we picked this weekend to buy!" According …

Papa John's To Supply 2,500 Pizzas to Naval Academy for Super Bowl Party

The Annapolis restaurants are preparing for the surge in business on Super Bowl Sunday as they will provide pizza, wings and more to midshipmen as well as local residents.

Super Bowl Sunday is always a busy day for pizza places, as many expect to sell thousands of pizzas and wings. But this year is extra special for Annapolis area Papa John's restaurants. "We are official partners with the Naval Academy, the Baltimore Ravens, and the NFL," said Ray Sears, operating partner of the Papa John's restaurants in Annapolis, in an email to Patch. "The midshipmen have voted us as the preferred pizza for the Super Bowl this season." Papa John's was reportedly asked to supply 2,500 pizzas for a Super Bowl party for thousands of midshipmen at Dahlgren Hall. Sears said he's purchased additional ovens, a van and heaters in preparation for the big day. In addition, he's coordinated drivers and logistics between 11 …

Baltimore Sends Off Ravens to Super Bowl XLVII

Fans gathered at the Inner Harbor to cheer on the Ravens as they left for New Orleans on Monday.

The ice and rain Monday morning didn't stop the Baltimore faithful from crowding the Inner Harbor to rally around the Ravens as they departed for New Orleans and Super Bowl XLVII. Lucky kids who got off school sat on shoulders, 20-somethings belted Ravens chants and several of the football players themselves were seen snapping photos and video of the send-off. Future Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis gave credit to the fans, without whom the franchise would not exist. "Baltimore, Baltimore—there is no Ravens without you guys," said Lewis, who announced his retirement at the beginning of the postseason. "We did this in 2000, and we're not going to New Orleans for nothing else but to bring back another ring to Baltimore." Gov. Martin O'…

'Ray Lewis' Makes SNL Appearance

Keenan Thompson, playing Baltimore Ravens linebacker "Ray Lewis," said he would be heading to a celestial place if the Ravens win the Super Bowl.

It wasn't really Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis appearing on Saturday Night Live's "Weekend Update," but Keenan Thompson stood in effectively. Thompson played the effusive linebacker to perfection. He brought the energy, the emotion and of course, the face paint. Watch his exchange with SNL's Seth Meyers above. The best lines: Meyers: A lot of us saw you cry last week during the National Anthem. Thompson: It's just I've never heard that song before. Meyers: You've been playing football your whole life? Thompson: I know, but, I always wear ear plugs before games to block out the sound of my own screams. At the end of the exchange, 'Lewis' explains what's going to happen if the Ravens win the Super Bowl: Thompson: I was driving up Sixth Avenue…
