Losing weight doesn't have to be an insurmountable feat.
I sometimes forget that my job puts me in a unique situation. I spend my days training for marathons and triathlons. I try new workouts and write about them. I meet athletes on a daily basis and learn about their latest adventure. To top that off I am lucky enough to be surrounded by a family that embraces fitness. My husband is a marathoner. My son runs cross country. My daughter plays high school soccer. My in-laws seldom let a day pass without some type of workout. For all of us, losing weight is something we do when we are trying to make race weight. It usually means somewhere between five and 10 pounds and though those five to 10 pounds can be stubborn ones to lose, we know it is not insurmountable. So when I talk about …

The looming prospect of fall and having to wear jeans again brings the issue of weight gained front and center for athletes and non-athletes alike.
I am not a big fan of the heat, but when people tell me how much they are looking forward to the fall I cringe. It isn’t because I don’t like the weather or appreciate the changing of the leaves. It isn’t even because fall is the craziest month in our house because of fall sports and school and the thousand and one other activities that fall one after the other. It is because of the jeans. Jeans don’t lie. If I have had one too many slices of blueberry pie or scoops of ice cream, I might be able to hide it from others and more importantly from myself with a nice light sundress, but the minute I have to put on jeans, the truth can no longer be denied. After speaking with several local athletes I find that I am not alone. It isn’t …

The Masters Swimming Program comes to Pasadena.
I am a slow learner and I often don’t connect the dots in life. So it isn’t surprising that after years of doing interval and speed work on my runs, it would take getting knocked over the head with a flier to make realize that adding speed work and intervals to my workouts might help improve my swimming as well. Before learning about U.S. Masters Swimming Programs in the county, I would head to the pool and swim at the same speed and intensity for an hour and call it a day. The fact that I was not improving should have had me searching out answers but no, that isn’t how my brain works. Luckily Masters Swimming programs have made their way not just into our county but right in our backyard at the Big Vanilla Athletic Club. Aquatics …

The Big Vanilla aims to help motivate people to get back to the gym, a tough thing to do especially after the holidays.
With the holidays nearly over, many people make the resolution to start the year off by being more physically fit. For most that means a trip down to the local gym. The Big Vanilla gym in Pasadena is kicking the year off by offering a 90-Day Fitness Challenge for anyone who is looking to tackle that New Year's resolution. The fitness challenge is available to both members and non-members. What better way to work off those holiday calories than to sign up for the challenge? The good thing about this challenge is that it is not limited to adults. Children as young as 13 years can sign up to be a part of a fitness team and there are no stipulations as to how many people can participate. “The 90-day challenge changes how you feel about …
