You can help rebuild communities that were hit by Hurricane Sandy by donating cans of food, volunteering for cleanup efforts—or simply sending a tweet. Patch is excited to announce our new effort to help support devestated communities after the storm. For every tweet sent with the hashtag #PatchRebuilds, Patch will donate $1 to the AmeriCares Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief Fund, up to $125,000. Your contribution will go toward medical and humanitarian aid, grants and programs to help Sandy survivors. It's been said it's far better to have a neighbor who's near than a brother who's far away, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Americans across the nation have proven to be the best neighbors and the strongest of families. This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles, VA, and Baltimore. A National Weather Service forecaster said Maryland is unlikely to get much of a hit from the nor'easter developing to the southeast, one that could hit areas still recovering from Superstorm Sandy.
Here we go again? Just a week after Superstorm Sandy rumbled up the eastern seaboard, a powerful nor'easter appears set to do the same, with the outside chance to dump a wintry mix on parts of Maryland. In an advisory Monday, the National Weather Service said the storm is expected to develop off the Carolina coast on Tuesday before moving north. Ken Widelski, a forecaster with the NWS in Sterling, VA, said in a phone interview that how much precipitiation the Baltimore area gets—if any—depends on how far west the storm forms. Along the Jersey shore and near New York City, Patch has covered the impact of the superstorm.
Here in Maryland, we were fortunate to get through the storm known as Sandy with little loss of life or property. Further north, residents weren't as lucky. Sandy hit hard in many parts of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut with dozen of lives lost and billions of dollars in damage. More than 300 Patch sites were impacted by Sandy. Many of those sites are in areas where residents are dealing with massive devastation. Patch editors there have been working hard to provide updates, often without the luxury of electricity, cell phone service or other services. Maryland was largely spared from catastrophic damage from Superstorm Sandy, but residents in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and other coastal areas were not so lucky. Wind directions, low temperatures and a dry summer all mitigated Hurricane Sandy's impact on the Bay.
The impact of Hurricane Sandy on the Chesapeake Bay was less than expected by Maryland's Department of Natural Resources (DNR). "The good news is that this storm came so late in the season that all of our underwater grasses in the Bay are going into a dormant phase like the trees," said Bruce Michael, who is the director of resource assessment for DNR. "A storm of this magnitude would have had a much more detrimental impact on the Bay if it were to come in June or July when things are much more active and alive." The summer was also a dry one, which means reservoirs were at much lower levels and could accommodate more storm water, Michael said. In the wake of the post-tropical storm known as Sandy, Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) announced the first quarter marking period will be extended to Nov. 7, two class days later than the previously scheduled Nov. 2 deadline. Because Sandy's effects cancelled classes for two days, delayed openings on Wednesday and left 17 schools without electricity, teachers will have an additional three days to complete testing and assessments to end the marking period. "Obviously our decision to close schools on Monday and Tuesday has impacted the plans of many teachers heading into the end of the first marking period, which had been scheduled for Friday," said Superintendent Kevin Maxwell in a letter sent home to parents. As of 2 p.m., officials from the utilities company report that power has been restored to more than 133,000 customers.
Although the brunt of superstorm Sandy has passed, Baltimore Gas & Electric officials caution that additional outages are expected. New outages may occur over the next few days as tree and tree limbs weakened by the storm continue falling, according to a news release. As of 2:36 p.m., electric service was restored to more than 166,274 customers. The BGE current outages map shows that 150,705 customers are still without. More than 4,500 workers are assisting in ongoing restoration efforts, the release states. Customers are asked to report power outages and downed wires by calling 1-877-778-2222.
