Updated: (Friday, 4:46 p.m)– A Jessup prison inmate who was reportedly assaulted Thursday night has died at a hospital in Baltimore. Maryland State Police and prison officials are are investigating the assault Javaughn A. Young, 26, a the correctional facility in Jessup on Thursday. State Police said Young sustained a head injury and was rushed Thursday to the Shock Trauma center in Balimore. He died at the hospital at about 12:15 p.m. Friday. Police said charges are pending against another inmate suspected of carrying out the assault. Investigators said the incident happened at about 7 p.m. Thursday at the Maryland Correctional Institution-Jessup. Police will be on the lookout for intoxicated drivers as people celebrate St. Patrick's Day this weekend.
As people plan for Irish stew and green beers in celebration of St. Patrick's Day, area police will be looking to keep the roads safe by taking drunk drivers off of them. Dubbed "Project Save Our Loved Ones" (SOLO), the initiative will consist of Anne Arundel County police and Maryland state troopers from the Glen Burnie Barrack with specialized training in recognizing impaired driving. The officers will set up DUI checkpoints and deploy mass patrols in areas around the county known to have frequent instances of impaired driving. "The intense enforcement effort will occur throughout the entire weekend and include on-duty and off-duty officers," according to a press release from AACOPD. Police say the man died from injuries sustained in an assault on campus.
Maryland State Police are looking for three suspects in the Saturday night murder of a Severn man who was a student at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). According to police, a man ran to approach a campus police officer at about 9 p.m. Saturday to report that his brother had been stabbed. The officer responded to the scene and found 21-year-old Edmond St. Clair of Severn lying on the roadside near his girlfriend's vehicle with stab wounds to his upper torso. Police said an emergency crew transported St. Clair to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, where he was pronounced dead. Anne Arundel students didn't participate in the regularly scheduled Cool School plunge because of exams and then weather conditions caused Friday's festivities to be canceled.
The early morning snow on Friday caused both excitement and disappointment for Anne Arundel County students who had plans to plunge in the icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis. Due to concerns for the safety of participants, the event on Friday was canceled by organizers Special Olympics Maryland and Maryland State Police (MSP) in collaboration with the school administration. Students did not have a delay in the start time of school Friday and previous communication from organizers indicated that the event would still occur in the event of rain or snow. While organizers have not said the event would be rescheduled, they did send an email saying that students will still receive their souvenir sweatshirts …

The scheduled semester break for Anne Arundel County Public Schools students could shift if there is inclement weather.
As Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) high school students prepare for mid-term exams to be held Jan. 22-25, parents are reminded that the semester break could shift if there is inclement weather that causes schools to close on a testing day. All AACPS students are currently scheduled off on Jan. 28 and 29. Note that AACPS students have a special day set aside this year for their participation in the Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge. The original date for students to plunge was Jan. 25 but, due to exams, the state police agreed to reschedule Anne Arundel students' plunge to Feb. 1. A passenger was ejected from a truck in a crash on early Tuesday morning, then struck and killed by another vehicle that did not stop.
UPDATE (4:40 p.m. Tuesday)—Police identified a 50-year-old Millersville man as the crash victim who died after being struck by another vehicle that did not stop Tuesday morning on I-97. Wilmer R. Borgmann III of Millersville was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Maryland State Police. A Pasadena man who was in a street sweeper truck (with Borgmann) that overturned was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. According to police, the crash occurred between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Tuesday on I-97 near Route 32 and Benfield Boulevard in the Millersville area. Before you know it, 2013 will be here and so will the annual Maryland State Police (MSP) Polar Bear Plunge. Each year, thousands take a quick dip in the Chesapeake Bay to raise funds for Special Olympics Maryland. The Plungefest, which is open to the public, is set for Jan. 26, 2013 at Sandy Point State Park. Frigid Friday for participating schools will take place the day before the Plungefest. State police urge motorists to stay off the roads as much as possible.
Although Maryland State Police is not handing out citations for being on the road, they are strongly discouraging residents from driving. State police spokesperson Greg Shipley warned residents that increasing amount of standing water is a significant hazard to drivers because of the high risk for vehicles to hydroplane. “People don’t realize that you don’t have to be going that fast on the road to hydroplane,” he said. Hydroplaning is caused by water being pushed up to the tires and creating a barrier of water, which decreases tire traction and inhibits drivers’ ability to safely steer their vehicles. The law that takes effect in Maryland on Oct. 1 still requires kids younger than 8 to be in a safety seat, unless they are 4 feet 9 inches or taller.
UPDATED (12:40 p.m.)—A new child safety seat law will go into effect Oct. 1 to remove the weight exemption for children who are more than 65 pounds, according to a Maryland State Police press release. The state law still requires that children use car seats up until the time they turn 8 years old, unless they are 4 feet 9 inches or taller. The law is a primary enforcement law, which means drivers can be detained and cited for violating the seat belt law. The fine is $50 for each child in the vehicle that is not properly restrained. The fine also applies to children ages 8 to 16, who are still required to wear a seat belt.
