A gap in addressing adolescent needs is becoming a growing concern, several panelists said at a forum Tuesday.
Opening the doors of access for those seeking mental health care is the single greatest challenge facing the industry today, a panel of experts said Tuesday. Representatives of Anne Arundel County government, schools, police and area hospitals met Tuesday at Anne Arundel Community College to discuss ongoing problems facing the mental health industry. The group meets annually at the community college to revisit the discussion. Anne Arundel County Public Schools has 20 armed police officers in middle and high schools.
The recent shooting in Newtown, CT has prompted school systems—and parents—across the country to evaluate the security of students. On Dec. 14, a lone gunman entered Sandy Hook School in Newtown and killed 26 people. Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) conducts regular emergency drills to help prepare students and staff for a variety of situations ranging from natural disasters to intruders in the building. The county currently has 20 armed school resource officers stationed at 21 middle and high schools, according to AACPS spokesman Bob Mosier. After a week filled with grieving over the Newtown tragedy, rumors about school shooting plots, emergency drills, worries about the "end of the world" and power outages, nearly one-third of students in Anne Arundel County didn't attend school on Friday. Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) spokesman Bob Mosier said that across the school system, 27.7 percent of students were absent—primarily in middle and high schools. He also added that there were no unusual incidents at schools on Friday to report. We did have one of the leading pediatric sleep researchers in the country, Dr. Judith Owens of Childrens National Medical Center in DC, come address Dr. Maxwell and the AACPS School Board to tell them the decades of research findings on these mental health issues and sleep deprivation from early high school start times.
