Anne Arundel County police say a man shot his estranged wife and himself early Monday morning.
UPDATE (10:50 a.m.)—A Bowie man is dead and a woman is in critical condition after a murder-suicide attempt in the 300 block of Harry S. Truman Parkway early Monday morning, according to Anne Arundel County police. Officers responded to the scene around 1 a.m. on Monday, and found two people with gunshot wounds. Emergency responders pronounced 50-year-old Calvin Cofield—who police believe to be the gunman—dead at the scene. Tracy Lynn West, 43, of Crownsville was transported to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, according to police. Police said that West is the estranged wife of Cofield. Annapolis police have charged Charles Spriggs and William Chase with first-degree murder.
Detectives arrested two men in connection with a fatal shooting in Annapolis less than 24 hours after officers discovered the victim in the Bywater community. Annapolis police said Charles Spriggs, 25, of Annapolis, and William Chase, 19, of Capital Heights, were arrested Thursday afternoon in connection with the death of Howard Durley. Police responded to the 1900 block of Copeland Street around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday. They reportedly discovered Durley laying near the rear of a residence with a gunshot wound. Emergency personnel pronounced Durley dead at the scene. Witnesses helped officers identify Spriggs and Chase, and police said the investigation revealed that the crime was not a random act. Officers responded to a call about a man laying outside a residence to discover that he'd been shot.
Annapolis police found a man fatally shot in the 1900 block of Copeland Street around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Officers responded to the Bywater Mutual Homes community for a report of a person who was on the ground outside a residence. They found the man suffering from a gunshot wound. He died at the scene. Police have not released the man's identity pending family notification. This is the first fatal shooting in Annapolis this year. In 2012, two fatal shootings occurred: one at Eastport Terrace and one at Robinwood. Both properties are owned by Annapolis' Housing Authority. Police have not made an arrest in either case.
