New Pickleball Facility Opens In Millersville With Indoor, Outdoor Courts

MILLERSVILLE, MD - A new pickleball facility just opened in Millersville.

The PutAway held its soft opening on Aug. 1 and its grand opening on Wednesday.

The complex offers seven fenced indoor courts and three lighted outdoor courts. The 23,900-square-foot facility has full locker rooms with showers and changing areas. There are also instructors on-site as well as event and lounge spaces.

The PutAway was launched by former pharmacist Timothy Schnupp, Severna Park Voice reported. The newspaper said pickleball players and coaches Jimmy Hall and Sonny Tannan invested in the business.

Severna Park Voice said The PutAway is located in the I-97 Business Park, a 67-acre site owned by St. John Properties Inc.

"An individual does not need to be freakishly athletic to excel at the sport because the court is relatively small and the ball travels much slower than other racquet-based games," Schnupp told Severna Park Voice. "You don’t have to invest countless hours on the weekend like you do with other sports. It is extremely accessible and inclusive for people of all ages and experience levels, along with relatively inexpensive to get started."

Pickleball Booming Locally, Nationwide

Pickleball is a partner sport most similar to tennis. The ball is bigger, and the court is smaller. This makes it more accessible to players of all ages.

The sport has exploded in popularity in recent years. Pickleball players flocked to tennis courts because of their similar designs. This strained tennis facilities and highlighted the need for dedicated pickleball courts.

The City of Annapolis added official pickleball courts to its existing tennis center at Truxtun Park in June 2021. Ball At The Mall offered another option in Anne Arundel County when it opened at Westfield Annapolis this summer.

The PutAway is the latest facility to open and offer memberships.

"We are thrilled to bring a premium indoor pickleball facility to Severna Park and the surrounding area," The PutAway said on its website. "The area’s rapidly growing pickleball community deserves a purpose-built, dedicated space to host year-round play."

The PutAway is located at 254 Najoles Road, Suites A through K.
