PASADENA, MD - A construction worker recently won $1 million on a scratch-off ticket that he bought at a Pasadena grocery store.
The Denton man stopped at the Lakeshore Plaza Safeway before work on Oct. 23 to scan a different scratch-off, which turned out to be a $50 winner.
The anonymous Maryland Lottery player used his first prize to buy two $20 scratch-offs, including a $1 Million Royale ticket, and one $10 scratcher. He rushed off to work and didn't check his tickets until later.
The man stopped at a gas station on the way home and scratched his three tickets, revealing a jackpot in the $1 Million Royale game.
He said he “almost fell over” after seeing the top prize.
“The first game was a $55 winner, and I was pretty happy about that,” the Caroline County resident said in a press release. “No win on the second, but that third ticket almost gave me a heart attack.”
The Eastern Shore man immediately called his girlfriend to share the news.
“I was stuttering that I hit and she thought I was saying that I was in a car accident,” he chuckled. “She said, ‘hit what, what did you hit’.”
The couple celebrated when he got home and showed her the ticket. The winner, who is a father and a grandfather, locked his ticket in a safe until he claimed his prize on Oct. 26.
He plans to buy new vehicles for both himself and his girlfriend. He will save the rest of his winnings.
Safeway #1539, located at 4211 Mountain Road, earned a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the big winner.
$1 Million Royale still has five more $1 million top prizes, five $50,000 prizes and sixty-one $10,000 prizes remaining. There are also hundreds of thousands of remaining smaller prizes ranging from $10 to $5,000.
