ANNAPOLIS, MD - Broadneck football's playoff run ended Friday with a state championship loss at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. Despite finishing as runner-ups, this was one of the school's best seasons ever.

The Bruins fell 21-0 to Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School of Upper Marlboro in the Maryland Class 4A state championship.

Broadneck is still searching for its first state title, but this was its deepest playoff run in 20 years. The Bruins made it to one other state final in 2003. They finished as the runner-up that year as well, the Severna Park Voice reported.

The Voice said the Bruins' "bend-don't-break" defense kept them in this weekend's game. A blocked punt and a 24-yard punt return offered sparks. But penalties, turnovers and a missed field goal stymied the Broadneck offense, the Voice reported.

“We keep our heads high until the very end. I feel like that’s been our mentality all season,” senior linebacker Jed Pellicano told the Voice. “Even if we’re down 56, we keep our heads high and we keep fighting. It’s hard, but that’s been our story the entire season. We all bring that source of energy. Regardless of the drives and how long they are, we bring energy to keep our heads high and to keep pushing.”

Broadneck faced an uphill playoff battle, beating two Montgomery County teams on the road.

The Bruins snuck past Northwest High School of Germantown 21-20 in the quarterfinal. They then handled Winston Churchill High School of Potomac 31-7 in the semifinal.
